White Mountains, New Hampshire

Mount Washington & the White Mountains

New Hampshire's highest peak, alpine ridgelines, and the heart of the White Mountains — big terrain, close to home.

Why go

Mount Washington (6,288 ft) is the tallest peak in the Northeast and famous for some of the worst weather on the planet. Around it, the White Mountain National Forest spreads out across ridgelines, notches, and waterfalls — a dense, accessible playground just a couple of hours from Portsmouth. It’s the perfect long-weekend overland trip.

Highlights

  • Mount Washington — summit by foot (Tuckerman Ravine, Lion Head), by the Auto Road, or by the Cog Railway.
  • Kancamagus Highway — the legendary “Kanc” scenic byway through the heart of the Whites.
  • Franconia Notch — Cannon Mountain, the Flume Gorge, and classic ridge hikes.
  • Waterfalls & swimming holes — Sabbaday Falls, Diana’s Baths, and more.

Good to know

  • Mount Washington’s summit weather is extreme and changes fast — check the Mount Washington Observatory forecast and turn back when needed.
  • Fall foliage (late September–October) is spectacular and busy.
  • Dispersed and developed camping options abound in the White Mountain National Forest.
