Why go
Mount Katahdin (5,269 ft) is the crown of Maine and the dramatic northern end of the Appalachian Trail. It sits inside Baxter State Park — a deliberately wild, low-development preserve where the roads are gravel, cell service is scarce, and self-sufficiency is the whole point. This is exactly the kind of trip an overland rig is built for.
Highlights
- Katahdin via the Hunt or Abol trail — a long, strenuous, rewarding summit day.
- Knife Edge — a legendary (and exposed) ridge traverse for experienced hikers.
- Baxter’s backcountry — ponds, moose, and quiet campsites away from the crowds.
- Golden Road — the iconic logging route through the North Maine Woods.
Good to know
- Baxter limits daily entries and parking at trailheads — day-use and camping reservations are essential and go fast. Plan ahead.
- The park has strict rules (size limits on vehicles, no pets in much of the park, carry-in/carry-out). Check current Baxter State Park regulations before you go.
- Gravel roads and remote conditions reward a capable, well-equipped vehicle.
Reserve your rig and we’ll help you sort the logistics.
